New Patients
We like to do a comprehensive examination during your first visit unless you have a dental emergency. We’ll ask you to give us some information about yourself and your dental and medical history (see forms below). These forms help determine the course of your treatment and let our doctors know more about your whole health picture.
You will have an examination of your teeth, gums, jaw alignment, and soft tissue. We will take digital radiograph (x-rays) to find areas of infection that need treatment. To make it easier for you to see what’s going on in your mouth, we also take photographs of any problems that we see with an intraoral camera. Photos of your smile assist in designing any cosmetic treatments you desire. If necessary, we will make cast models of your teeth to examine your bite. The exam includes a blood pressure check and oral cancer screening – again, to assess your total health.
If your gum tissue is healthy, our dental hygienist will also clean your teeth at this first visit. If your gums aren’t as healthy as they should be (that is, you have gingivitis or periodontal disease), our hygienist will begin teaching you about eliminating your problem. You may need several visits with the hygienist if you are having gum problems.
